First Lady Columba Bush Launches Internet Safety Campaign in Florida and Unveils www.iKeepSafe.org
On Sept. 29, First Lady Columba Bush unveiled an Internet safety educational campaign in Florida during a news conference in North Miami Beach at the Madie Ives Elementary School. Bush, a member of the Internet Keep Safe Coalition announced the campaign and introduced a new crime-fighting agent for the Internet age - Faux Paw the Techno Cat.
The Internet Keep Safe Coalition teaches basic rules of Internet safety to children and parents, both online and in school. Studies show one in five youth using the Internet received an online sexual solicitation and 29 percent of children using the Internet freely give out their home address if asked. The Coalition's goal is to reduce these statistics by ensuring children understand and practice safe online behavior.
The Coalition is a nonprofit organization founded by Jacalyn S. Leavitt, Utah's First Lady from 1993-2003. It includes the AMA Alliance, FMA Alliance and Governors and first spouses from 49 states. Other members of the coalition include crime prevention organizations, law enforcement agencies, foundations and businesses. For more information visit www.ikeepsafe.org.
